Public safety fiber DAS extends professional radio coverage into large buildings, tunnels and underground sites. A master unit at the headend receives the radio signal, converts it to optical and sends it over fiber to remote units. Each remote unit then converts the signal back to RF and feeds local antennas, so first responders and operational teams keep coverage where a single BDA cannot reach. In addition, remote units can be placed in stairwells, basements and car parks where coverage is often weakest.
The headend can be fed directly from a base station or repeater site. Alternatively, it can take the signal off-air through a pickup repeater, also known as a BDA, connected to a donor antenna. The choice depends on the radio network operator, the available donor signal and local requirements.
Public safety projects usually have to meet codes set by the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ), including coverage targets, backup power and monitoring. Therefore, product listings and certifications must be confirmed for each specific model and project. Our guide TETRA and DMR Coverage: Planning Reliable In-Building Communications walks through the full process.
For smaller buildings, a BDA may be enough. See our TETRA and DMR coverage solutions by band. For cellular coverage, see the cellular fiber DAS, or return to all fiber DAS systems.
This depends on the master and remote units selected. Separate units are available for VHF, 400 MHz and 800 MHz, so multi-band designs are reviewed per project.
