GSM-R Repeaters for Railway Coverage

GSM-R repeaters extend the railway communication network into stations, tunnels, cuttings and other locations along the track where the signal from the base stations is weak. Because GSM-R carries operational voice and signalling data for rail operations, continuous coverage along the line is essential.

Products in this group

  • 21 dBm band selective mini repeater
  • 30 dBm band selective power repeater
  • 30 dBm and 40 dBm channel selective high power repeaters
  • High selectivity band and channel selective repeater
  • 43 dBm band selective high power repeater for indoor or outdoor coverage
  • GSM-R and LTE-R high selectivity repeater

According to their datasheets, the channel selective high power repeaters offer a cost-effective alternative to adding a new base station. Likewise, the band selective models address indoor and outdoor coverage problems in GSM-R systems.

Band selective or channel selective?

Railway corridors often run close to public mobile networks that use neighbouring frequencies. For example, a band selective repeater amplifies the whole GSM-R band. A channel selective repeater, by contrast, amplifies only the configured channels, which reduces interference with adjacent networks and keeps output power on the railway carriers.

Typical railway deployments

  • Tunnels, combined with in-tunnel antennas or leaky feeder cable
  • Stations, depots and maintenance facilities
  • Deep cuttings and curves where the line of sight to the base station is lost
  • Feeding a distributed antenna system in larger structures

In long tunnels, designers often combine repeaters with in-line boosters or a fiber DAS to maintain signal levels along the full length of the tunnel.

Looking ahead to LTE-R and FRMCS

Meanwhile, many railways are planning the move from GSM-R to newer systems such as LTE-R and FRMCS. Therefore, the GSM-R and LTE-R repeater in this group offers a path for operators who need both technologies during the transition.
